Last month I talked about one of my new year’s snowflaking ideas, which was to sell my old books on Amazon.ca. And things have been going like gangbusters! I’m up to about $40 now in sales, however of course the shipping costs are eating into that amount so my total profit isn’t that much, but at least:

I’m getting these books out of my house.

Others are able to enjoy them.

I’ve earned about $10 gross so far.

I know that doesn’t seem like a lot, but quite frankly, I’ll take it! It’s $10 I didn’t have before, and I’ve still got a whole box of books still left to go. My original idea was to leave them on Amazon.ca for 3 months, and if they didn’t sell, then I’d take them to a used book store. At this point the $10 I’ve earned is probably more than I would have earned taking them to a used book store, so I’m happy.

How have your snowflaking efforts been going?

Up next in the Book Snowflake is Suze Orman’s The Road to Wealth, Revised Edition.

This is a mammoth brick of a book in comparison to Suze’s other books, but it’s well-worth the effort. It’s billed as “America’s Most Popular Comprehensve Guide to Your Money”, and I must say it is pretty danged comprehensive. There are sections on pretty much every personal financial category you can think of. It’s written as a question & answer session, so that if you want to know “What if one month I go over my credit limit by accident?” flip to the Managing Debt second, and take a look at the answer. If you want to know “how much should I spend on a funeral?”, flip to the Financial Intimacy section and read the answer. It’s very easy to read and has a lot of good information for readers. It’s not for the faint of heart of course, since it is over 575 pages, but it’s definitely a good read.

Again, it’s US-centric so there’s a lot of information that doesn’t apply to me, but it had me thinking about a lot of things I might not have thought about in a while, like “as a single woman, do I need a will?” and “as a mid-30s woman, should I revist my retirement investment goals this year?” And so much more. I actually even took notes this time around!

If you’ve never thought about your personal finances, or your family’s personal finances, I’d recommend getting this book and reading it all the way through. You’ll find something in there that speaks to you directly, and spurs you to action. Enjoy!

Ever since Oprah decided to give away Suze Orman’s latest book away for free on her website (you can still download it here), I’ve been on a bit of a Suze Orman reading kick. Or snowflake, in keeping with the building idea of paying off my debt.

I’m not normally a fan of Suze’s, as I do find her a bit overbearing and a tad condescending, but that’s usually when I see her on tv. I have this visceral reaction to her and I end up changing the channel. But reading her books is a different story. I find her to be rather good as an author, as she does take her time and explain both her ideas and financial terms well.

Up first in the Suze Orman book snowflake is The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke.

The book is well-written, and speaks directly to all those 20- and 30- somethings who have a mountain of debt and don’t know what to do about it. It was written in 2005, but still resonates even today, as the ideas she talks about are still relevant. She talks about investigating your credit history, how to handle student debt, how to save, and making big ticket purchases. My only negative comment about the book is that it’s US-centric. There’s not much to be done if you don’t live in the US. Being a Canadian I’m always on the lookout for information that would apply to me. So while some of the specifics don’t apply to me and the rest of my countrymen (like opening a Roth IRA, or finding out my FICO score), the ideas are still relevant. Instead of finding out my FICO score, I just look up my credit history from TransUnion and Equifax. Instead of investing in my 401k, I invest in my RRSP. And so on. I just had to gloss over that US-specific information, and look at the advice that Suze was trying to communicate.

So go check out the book if you’re interested in hearing what Suze’s got to say about “Generation Debt”.

I decided that I’d had enough of all the snow we’ve gotten here in Toronto, and that I needed something a little more uplifting and heartening. So a nice, new theme that’s a little more spring-like.

There’s not much else going on here at AinD.com these days. I’ve been reading a few interesting personal finance books that I’ll tell you about in future posts that have given me a lot of food for thought. Some really good ideas about how to get a handle on your finances and get your debts under control. I’m excited about one of them in particular, so I’ll be sure to write up a good review about that in the next few days (I’m almost finished.)
