It’s Official, I’m Official!

A few weeks ago I passed my probationary period at the new job. You know that 3-month period at the beginning of any new full-time job where you could be laid off without cause? Yeah, that probationary period. I passed it on July 21st. Woo! And do you know how I celebrated? With a sick day! Yep, true story. I woke up that day with a nasty migraine and spent the day on the couch. Gotta love it.

But I was pleased with myself because even though I’ve been working for more than half my life now at various jobs, and in my current field for almost 9 years now, and even though I know I’m a good, solid worker, I’ve always got that worry in my head that “they won’t like me”. I almost feel like Sally Field at the Oscars all those years ago. *sigh* I know it’s silly, but I guess that’s just me.

A friend of mine celebrated with me that day by worrying about whether or not she’d have a job by the end of the day. Most of her team had been laid off over the course of the last few months, so that right now it’s her and her boss. And her boss works out of the New York office. So she’s been super-worried for the last while. She’s a little concerned because she’s the main breadwinner in her family, and while her husband is currently employed, he does work in an industry that has been hard-hit by the downturn in the economy. That day she kept email me with updates, and thankfully, she kept her job! She’s still employed, still at the same hours, and doesn’t have to join the line up at the Employment office. Phew.

I’m excited and pleased that I’ve passed  my probationary period so that I can concentrate fully on my job, and I’m happy for my friend that still has her job.
