Money Well Spent

I can’t remember if I blogged about this or not, but earlier this spring I decided to spend some money on a tennis club membership. I was a competitive player in my youth, but since university haven’t really played all that much. I was finding that I missed playing, so I started investigating the local clubs. Sure, I could have played at the city courts for free, but unfortunately there’s always a group of people who end up camping out at the courts, and it’s hard to get on. (even though you’re not supposed to camp there like that, people do because the courts aren’t monitored.)

I found a club near me that had a great price: $120 for the summer, and they supply the balls. I had to pay a one-time $50 initiation fee, which brought it up to $170, but that’s still pretty cheap for a big city. And this club is quite friendly, with lots of people who want to play, lots of socials, and did I mention the free tennis balls? Yeah, that’s a big draw, cheesy as that sounds.

Well, I must say that I have been enjoying my new membership. The club opened Easter weekend, and I’ve been playing at least once a week since then. That’s more than I’ve played in the last 15 years combined! So I’m quite pleased. I’m enjoying myself, rediscovering what I’m good at, what I need to work on, and in general, just having fun. My ankles are the only thing protesting all this tennis playing, as they’re not used to all the activity. This means I can’t play on consecutive days, but in the 6 or 7 weeks I’ve been playing I’ve managed to get that rest time down to two days, which is great. I’m hoping with some exercises I’ll be able to get it down to nothing so that I’ll be able to play any time, whenever, even a few times in the same day! (weekends only of course)

So while I did spend more than $100 on something exercise-related, in my opinion it’s well worth it. I’m having fun, getting some exercise, meeting new people, and supporting a local business.  See you out on the courts!
