Resist This!
One of the perks of working downtown in the financial district is that I thought I would be away from all the shopping temptations of other areas of the city. “At least here there are only office towers and food courts, and maybe some swanky expensive restaurants I won’t eat in,” I thought to myself….Until today.
I went out to enjoy the nice sunshine at lunch time, and walked along the street towards a park I knew was nearby. And then I remembered that there was an outdoors-y type store nearby, and as I’m on the hunt for some summer sandals, I thought I’d stop in. Now before you start yelling at me that I don’t need more shoes, I must admit that I actually do need some summer sandals, just casual ones, as my beloved Skechers sandals have given up the ghost. I have been wearing them for 3 summers now, almost every day, and they’ve just gotten all stretched out and uncomfortable (plus one of the straps is starting to come off.) So I’m hunting for new ones. But since I have specific requirements, and those requirements aren’t in fashion right now, it’s been a long hunt.
Anyhoo, I popped into the outdoors store to see if they had a specific pair I was looking for, but they didn’t. They had some others that will do in a pinch, but I’d like to see if I can find my “dream” pair first before settling…it’s not quite summer yet, so I’ve got some time.
At this point I realized I only had about 10 minutes left of my lunch hour, so I left the store to go on home. And then I saw that they’d put in a Winners store nearby. Hmm… (Winner’s is a discount store where you can find namebrand items for pretty cheap.) Interesting, but I didn’t really have time to go looking through there. But I popped in anyways. I figured a little window shopping couldn’t hurt. I would look, but not buy. Easy enough, right?
Wrong.
I walked passed the sunglassees display, and saw that they had Oakleys on the rack. I absolutely love my Oakley sunglasses, and even though they’re quite expensive, they’re good quality, and last me forever. I’ve had two pairs, and I love them both. One I use for sports, which is great, because they’ve got those rubber thingies on the side so they don’t slip off. The other are my regular, everyday shades. I’ve had them for almost 10 years now, and I thought it might be nice to get a new pair that are more in fashion. Not that these ones won’t do of course, but I was just looking, right?
Yikes, I actually found a pair I liked. They were $129, but they go regularly for over $299, so this was a tremendous deal. So I did what everyone counsels: I walked around the store with them for a few minutes, to see if I really, really wanted them. As I was still mulling it over, I realized that I was actually late getting back to the office! Yikes!
So the point became moot: I didn’t have time to buy them, as there was a lineup at the cash register. I put the shades back on the rack, and walked out the store.
Phew. That’s my confession for today. I saved $129.
