Goals For 2009

Going through my Google Reader this week I see that GiveMeBackMyFiveBucks has posted her 2009 goals, and that got me thinking about whether I should set some myself. I’ve never set any financial goals for myself, other than “try not to spend more than you make”, but since that little ole widget over yonder tells me that this isn’t working, perhaps it’s time I give it a try. So here goes:

Financial goals:

• $5000 in the Emergency Fund. I had initially said I wanted $7500, but I’m thinking I should lower it a bit so that when I reach the goal, I’ll have that psychological lift of accomplishing something.
• $2000 in the Travel Fund. My sister & I have decided to postpone our trip from spring 2009 to fall 2009, so this will give me a better chance at meeting this goal. I’ve already got 2/3rds of the cost of plane ticket saved up, but the extra time will let me save up for both the ticket AND spending cash, so I’m excited about this one.
• Pay off $10,000 of my debt. I know this is a bit ambitious, but I feel that I need to take some sort of stand and set some lofty goals. I accumulated my debt with $10 here and $15 there, so I feel like I’ve been doing the same thing in my debt repayment, you know? Hopefully this will give me the kick in the ass that I need.
