How to Save Money to Lounge Around

My current couch is over 7 years old now, and while it is still in good shape, I would love to buy a new one to replace it.  Of course I don’t have the money to replace it, especially because it is in good shape. No sense in buying a new one when this one’s perfectly fine, right?

Except with summer coming along and the temperature going up, my couch has one major flaw: it’s got wool in it. That means that in the summer it retains heat! So sitting on it is a hot proposition when the temperature goes up. One of my plans was to recover the couch so that: 1-it looks better, and 2-is not as hot to sit on in the summer time.

I’ve been trying to find the right fabric to recover it, however haven’t been able to find one I liked. So I decided to bite the bullet and buy a slip cover for the couch. I don’t actually like slip covers because no matter how well it fits the couch, it always look a tad sloppy. But in the interest of saving money, I thought it was the best option. I managed to actually save $50 right off the bat because I went with the “wrong” style slip cover for my couch (my couch is a t-cushion couch, but I bought the “regular” slip cover.) The t-cover cover was $149, and the regular one was $89. I decided to go with the regular one (besides, it was advertised as being “stretch”, so I figured it would work just fine.) And  wouldn’t you know it, it did! Then also purchased some cushion covers for the back cushions on the couch that were on sale, and voila, I was done!

So the total damage was:

Slip cover: $89

Cushion covers: $23.86 (5.99 times 4)

Total (without tax): $112.96

While that does seem like a lot, consider that a new couch would start out at around $399, so this was definitely a cheaper way to go, and I’ve got a new-to-me couch! I will definitely start saving up for a new couch, as I would like to buy a new one, however since it’s a “want” and not a “need”, it will have to wait. Other things take precedence.
