Vacations don’t have to cost you a fortune to enjoy. How do I know this? Because over the last 8 days, I have been enjoying a trip to the Canadian West Coast, and have only been using the cash I withdrew last Friday. My money finally ran out last night, which I think is pretty good. How have we been having lots of fun without spending tons of money?
Free or nearly free music concerts
My friends are big fans of local music, and in the summertime there are lots of free shows in the parks. Plus they are also friends with a lot of the local musicians, who give them discounted tickets to their shows. In addition, we also managed to find some discounted tickets online, at one of the club’s websites, so we got in for half price, plus got a free drink & some free pizza (that was at the Roxy). So it’s definitely worth while looking up these other resources.
Discounted sporting event tickets
Because my friend also enjoys going to sporting events, we were able to find discounted tickets to both a BC Lions game, as well as a Vancouver Nationals game. For both of those events, we spent a grand total of $22 and change, and had really good seats. They were both fun events, and we had a good time.
Free fun in the city
Being in Vancouver means there are great places to go walking around, which is of course, free to do. One day we walked the SeaWall from Stanley Park over to Yaletown. Another day we walked the park in Ambleside. Another day I wandered around downtown, cruising down Robson street and Gastown in an afternoon.
The Breakdown:
Discounted concerts: $13
Free concerts: $0 (one show)
BC Lions game: $16.20
Vancouver Canadians: $5.99
Walking around: $0
Total: $25.19
Of course I did spend about $160 total, including the items listed above, but I didn’t count the beers we had at the baseball stadium, or the bottle of water I purchased during our walk on the SeaWall. I am quite impressed that we managed to do so many interesting & fun things for free or nearly free. Very nice. We even managed to save a lot of money on eating out, since we only did that once a day. And sometimes that was just a smog-dog from the street vendor, which is significantly cheaper than going to a restaurant.
In conclusion, if you’re planning a trip somewhere, be sure to do some research beforehand and see if there are some free or nearly free things you can do. It may just help you stretch those dollars (or euros, or pesos, or whatever) much further.
Happy travels!
